Unearthing career possibilities with your team member

5 minutes

As your team members continue to master their tasks and current skills, you may need to start looking for career development opportunities for them. Although prescribing the usual skills development trainings appear to be the safest choice, consider that career development can also lie in other opportunities.

Set a conversation with your team member. Lead with the following questions to identify their current strengths as well as their goals:

1
What do you like most about your current role?
This opens the conversation about their daily tasks and objectives in the job, allowing you to frame the conversation starting with their perspective. Remember, to make an informed decision on possible career opportunities, their perception of their role is key.
2
What skills are most helpful? Why?
This question looks into what skills they currently have and how frequent these are utilised.
3
What do you feel could be the next stages in your career development?
Your team member discusses how they see themselves in the future, allowing you to draw initial plans for their development. Also, this question helps you become more familiar with their overall career goals.
4
Are these in line with your long-term goals? Why or why not?
You empower your participant to consider their long-term goals with this question, giving them the opportunity to develop their career the way they always envisioned. Moreover, this question brings to light their real goals and whether or not your initial recommendations best suit your participant.

By identifying both their long-term goals and the next steps in their career plan, you and your participant can then 'negotiate' a plan that satisfies both.
5
What steps do you think are best to reach it?
Finally, you identify possible development opportunities with this question.

With these questions, you can then create a list of possible career development opportunities that are well-informed, catered to their career development, and supportive of their long-term goals.
