Getting ready for your 3-month probation meeting

Getting ready for your 3-month probation meeting

10 minutes

Your 3-month probation meeting is a great chance to show how much you’ve grown and what you’ve accomplished in your role so far.

Here’s how you can prepare and set up the meeting:

1
Look back at your goals
Take a moment to revisit the goals and expectations that were outlined when you started. How have you measured up? Reflect on the projects you’ve completed, the challenges you’ve faced and the progress you’ve made.

Be ready to talk about specific examples.
2
Gather evidence of your wins
Make a list of your key wins—projects you’ve completed, contributions you’ve made, and any positive feedback you’ve received.

If possible, back up your accomplishments with numbers or other evidence to show the difference you’ve made.

Have any notes, examples, or documents handy for the meeting.
3
Plan the structure of the conversation
Be ready to discuss your strengths and the contributions you’re proud of.

Acknowledge any hurdles you’ve encountered and how you’re working to overcome them.

Share your goals for the next few months and how you plan to achieve them.
4
Send the meeting invite
Send the calendar invite with enough notice so your manager has time to prepare too. Here is some suggested wording:

Subject Line: 3-Month Check-In

Hi [Manager’s Name],

As I’m nearing the end of my 3-month probation, I’d love to schedule some time to chat about how things have been going and get your feedback. Would [Date and Time] work for you? If not, I’m flexible—just let me know what suits you best.

Looking forward to our conversation.

Thanks,

[Your Name]
5
Get Ready for feedback
Be open - Expect some constructive feedback and think about how you can use it to keep growing.

Prepare a few questions for your manager about your performance.

With these steps, you’ll be well-prepared to have a meaningful and positive discussion about your progress and future in the organisation.
