Enabling Work-life Integration

Setting boundaries to work-life integration

Setting boundaries to work-life integration

Most people know what the word “boundaries” means, but they have no idea how to define their own. You might think of clear boundaries as something like a property line.

But personal boundaries are not rigid lines drawn in the sand that are clear for all to see.

Boundaries are a way to take care of ourselves. When you understand how to set and maintain healthy boundaries, you can avoid the feelings of resentment, disappointment, and anger that build up when limits have been pushed.

To safeguard against the challenges of work-life integration, follow these 4 steps to set boundaries that work for you.

1
Define your boundaries
Clearly outline what is acceptable and what is not in your work and personal life.
2
Openly communicate your boundaries to your team and at home
Ensure your team and family members understand your boundaries by discussing them openly.

Encourage your team members to communicate their own boundaries.
3
Remind people if needed (but always stick to your boundaries)
Remind others of your boundaries if needed, and consistently stick to them.
4
Don't be afraid to say “no” to things
Don't hesitate to decline requests or activities that compromise your boundaries.
