Identifying where your people are on the Change Curve

Identifying where your people are on the Change Curve

5 minutes

To help your people navigate through change, knowing where your team stands on the Change Curve is key in finding out your next step.

Though people may have different observable reactions to change, these feelings usually follow a similar pattern.  To find out how you can tackle these difficulties, start with providing them the platform to articulate how they truly feel through the Change Curve itself.

1
Set a meeting with your team. Present and collectively review the current status of the change your team/organisation is facing. Make room for any questions or concerns.
2
Show the Change Curve to your participants and walk them through each phase. Encourage questions, clarifications and general discussions. Remember to highlight the significance of discussing these phases as a crucial step towards successfully moving through change.

3
Have them identify their position on the Change Curve on their own. Once everyone is ready, illustrate the Change Curve on a whiteboard (a piece of paper or an interactive online space works too) and encourage each participant to place an "x" on their position on the change curve.

Emphasise that participation is voluntary, and that some team members can choose whether or not to share their position on the curve.
4
Collectively reflect on the team’s Change Curve by asking your team to share their thoughts. Allow a few minutes for everyone to note their reflections down.
5
Prompt the group to share their thoughts. Incite openness by sharing your own insights to the team.

Start the conversation with the following questions:

1. What insights does this picture provide?
2. What changes were particularly difficult for you to accept or overcome?
3. What should be taken into consideration as we effectively navigate through change?

As the dialogue happens, take note of what is being shared. As change continues, these may provide further insight for you as a leader.
6
Discuss and affirm as necessary on critical areas discussed. Close the discussion by synthesising all the responses, making sure to acknowledge the especially critical points raised. Remember to reinforce your availability to support them through change, and that you are open to questions or clarifications.

Engaging in this exercise will help you and your team pinpoint your current positions on the Change Curve. Use this activity on a regular basis throughout the entire change process.
